Hawaii, short on space, to ship trash to Yakama landfill; tribe fears introduction of invasive elements

Honolulu, pressed for landfill, has been searching for years for a spot on the U.S. mainland to dump its municipal waste. Starting in 2004, mainland landfills began offering themselves as dump sites. Hawaiian Waste Systems eventually selected the site in Klickitat County, Wash., along the Columbia River dividing Washington from Oregon, and began baling tons of trash in anticipation of the 2,600-mile voyage from Hawaii.

In their complaint to the federal court, the Yakama cited fear of invasive plant species from Hawaii, as well as microbes, insects and other pests that could attach themselves to the trash cargo and contaminate Yakama lands.
