Sheet mulch gardening can work almost anywhere

Sheet mulching can be accomplished with a variety of materials. Oftentimes American gardeners lay flattened cardboard over a site and top that with purchased composted materials. The Ecological Landscaping Association’s Tricia Diggins offers step-by-step instructions and photos for one form of site preparation:

Sheet mulching is a method using several layers of mulching materials to improve soil and plant health and to kill or suppress unwanted plants. Our goal is to foster a healthy soil food web by making conditions favorable to increased biological activity in the soil while suppressing weeds so that mulching does not become more maintenance intensive than mowing grass.
