Ohio database tracks state’s 18,700 species and natural features

“As far as the Midwest goes, Ohio has relatively high biodiversity,” says Greg Schneider, administrator for the state’s DNR Biodiversity Database Program.

Ohio is home to at least six major habitats:

  • Beaches and marshes near Lake Erie.
  • Northern boreal forests in the northeast.
  • The Appalachian forest region in the southeast.
  • Prairies in the west.
  • Blue grass vegetation in the south-central area.
  • Sand barrens and wet prairies in the oak openings region in the northwest.

Stimulus money funds jobs to fight invasive plants

The Ohio Woodland Job Corps is using $4.4 million in federal stimulus money to train workers and send them after the invasive species undermining the quality of that state’s forests. About $3 million will pay crews directly, the balance will pay for training, supplies, equipment and unemployment insurance. Read more here.
