Here’s a partial inventory of the things I’ve found in front of my duplex on a boozy block of northeast Minneapolis: two abandoned bicycles; a disemboweled 13-inch TV; a frenzied Chihuahua named Apollo; three small boulders hurled by anguished college football fans; and a puzzled gentleman in a windbreaker, bleeding from the head.

Author Michael Tortorello goes on to describe the process of claiming the rights/responsibility for gardening the “hell strip” next to the curb by his home, his exploration of species to plant, and how others have succeeded in their cities across the U.S. Read more here.

Wasps: What to do

I spent a lot of time laboring around the yard this weekend — with one minor wasp encounter. This morning I find that Grist writer Umbra Fisk has posted a timely reminder about how to manage these little buggers’ potentially painful presence.
