Although this story hails from the Philippines, its lesson is universal.
Due to the effects of El Nino, farmers have not been able to work their fields as usual. Requiring an income, some are digging up and selling local indigenous plants, such as giant ferns, which are distributed to Manilla. A Department of Environment and Natural Resources spokesperson asks citizens to report any such activity and insists, “We have other sources of income which do not sacrifice the environment.”
