A tie between fresh air—or polluted air—and IQ has been demonstrated by two city studies. Both New York City and Krakow, Poland, have areas where levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are high enough to have deleterious effects on fetal development, resulting in measurable cognitive impairment by age five.
