National Organizations

“Show Me How”

Ecological Landscaping Association is a nonprofit, member-based organization of landscape professionals, homeowners, and community groups who believe in using landscape practices that are environmentally safe and beneficial. [Based in Framingham, Mass., ELA specializes in practices suited to that geographic area.]

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center exists to increase the sustainable use and conservation of native wildflowers, plants and landscapes. [Based in Austin, Texas, the Wildflower Center specializes in practices suited to that geographic area.]

New England Wildflower Society exists to promote the conservation of temperate North American flora through education, research, horticulture, habitat preservation, and advocacy. [NEWFS’s William Cullina has produced three of the most helpful propagation books ever: Wildflowers; Native Ferns, Moss, and Grasses; and Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines. ]

North American Native Plant Society (originally Canadian Wildflower Society) aims to inspire an appreciation of North America’s native plants through education and information, aiding the restoration of healthy ecosystems across the continent. Ducks Unlimited is the world’s leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation.

Humane Animal Welfare Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization. [The HAWS mission extends to all species and thereby the habitat that supports wildlife. Their excellent book, Wild Neighbors, The Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife, will answer virtually every question and concern you have about the critters who share your yard.]

National Wildlife Federation is America’s largest conservation organization. We work with more than 4 million members, partners and supporters in communities across the country to protect and restore wildlife habitat, confront global warming and connect with nature. North American Bluebird Society is a non-profit education, conservation and research organization that promotes the recovery of bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting bird species in North America.

Invasives

Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health works to provide an accessible and easily used archive of high quality images related to invasive and exotic species, with particular emphasis on educational applications.

Don’t Move Firewood is a website was developed building on conversations under the auspices of the Continental Dialogue on Non-Native Forest Insects and Diseases. The Continental Dialogue is a group of organizations and individuals that cultivates and catalyzes collaborative action among diverse interests to abate the threat to North American forests from non-native insects and diseases.

Invasipedia houses information on invasive plants, animals, and pathogens, and especially how to best manage them. Its foundation is the large amount of species management information developed by the The Nature Conservancy’s Global Invasive Species Team. It is now supported by the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health as part of the BugwoodWiki.

Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States is a collaborative project between the National Park Service, the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, and the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England. The purpose of the Atlas is to assist users with identification, early detection, prevention, and management of invasive plants.

National Environmental Coalition on Invasive Species is a national partnership of 15 major environmental organizations that provides a united expert and scientific voice on invasive species policy. Its leaders include scientists, lawyers, activists, and advocates with many years of experience on invasives policy.

National Invasive Species Information Center is a gateway to invasive species information; covering federal, state, local and international sources provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Midwest Invasive Plant Network mission is to reduce the impact of invasive plant species in the Midwest.

Pacific Northwest Invasive Plant Council works to protect landscapes from invasive non-indigenous plants by providing an open forum to share information and to promote solutions.

Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Council support the management of invasive exotic plants in natural areas of the Southeast U.S. by providing a forum for the exchange of scientific, educational and technical information.

Conservation/Restoration

Ecological Society of America is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of scientists founded in 1915 to promote ecological science by improving communication among ecologists; raise the public’s level of awareness of the importance of ecological science; increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensure the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers.

Environmental Defense Fund is dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are access to clean air and water, healthy and nourishing food, and flourishing ecosystems.

Center for Native Ecosystems works to conserve and recover native species and ecosystems of the Greater Southern Rockies using the best available science.

Center for Plant Conservation works to conserve and restore the imperiled native plants of the U.S. to secure them from extinction.

Great Plains Native Plant Society engages in any educational activities which may further public familiarity with plants of the Great Plains, their uses and enjoyment.

Midwest Ecological Landscape Association is a community of landscape designers, contractors, suppliers and nurseries committed to sustainability. [Their motto: Live Green and Prosper.]

Native Plant Conservation Campaign is a national network of affiliate native plant societies, botanical gardens, and other plant conservation organizations. NPCC collaborates to exchange information and create a strong national voice to advocate for native plant species and community conservation.

The Nature Conservancy works to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. [Chapters exist throughout the U.S.]

Plant Conservation Alliance works to protect native plants by ensuring that native plant populations and their communities are maintained, enhanced, and restored.

The Prairie Enthusiasts is a private organization committed to the protection and management of native prairie and savanna of the Upper Midwest.

Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself since 1892. They are the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. [Chapters exist throughout the U.S.]

Society for Ecological Restoration is a non-profit organization infused with the energy of 2,300 members, individuals and organizations who are actively engaged in ecologically sensitive repair and management of ecosystems through an unusually broad array of experience, knowledge sets and cultural perspectives. [SER is an international organization with seven regional chapters in the U.S. and two in Canada.]

Southern Appalachian Botanical Society was formed at West Virginia University for all persons interested in the botany of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative is an interdisciplinary effort by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the United States Botanic Garden to create voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction,
and maintenance practices.

Weeds Across Borders is a cooperative effort of agencies and organizations from Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Federal Agencies

Environmental Protection Agency, Green Landscaping with Native Plants [This link relates particularly to states adjoining the Great Lakes.]

Federal Highway Administration Wildflower Program has evolved into a holistic roadside program. [The FHA has produced a thoughtful, well-researched book with sound advice for both highway managers and we citizens who can lead the way to improving public rights-of-way: Roadside Use of Native Plants .] See also Roadside Revegetation.

Federal Interagency Committee for the Management of Noxious and Exotic Weeds represents an unprecedented formal partnership between 16 federal agencies with direct invasive plant management and regulatory responsibilities spanning across the United States and territories. FICMNEW continues to bridge the gap between federal agency invasive plant management and science activities and has been a driving force behind the national emphasis against the broader invasive species threat.

National Environmental Education Foundation, chartered by Congress in 1990 to advance environmental knowledge and action, NEEF provides knowledge to trusted professionals who, with their credibility, amplify messages to national audiences to solve everyday environmental problems. The National Environmental Education Act of 1990 established the National Environmental Education Foundation as a complementary organization to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), extending its ability to foster environmental literacy in all segments of the American public as well as leveraging private funds that EPA, as a federal agency, could not access.

The National Park Service, with the help of volunteers and park partners, safeguards nearly 400 national parks which receive more than 275 million visitors every year.

National Resources Conservation Service (USDA) helping people help the land.

Plants Database (USDA) provides standardized information about the vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories.

U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management National Landscape Conservation System conserves, protects, and restores nationally significant landscapes recognized for their outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
